# Packages

A package is a saved box: a name and its outer dimensions. Define the ones you
actually pack into, and your team picks a package by name instead of typing
dimensions on every shipment: fewer keystrokes, and far fewer re-rates caused
by a mistyped size.

Packages carry dimensions only, not weight. Weight varies with what goes in the
box, so it stays on the parcel.

One package on the account can be the default (`is_default`), which is the one
pre-selected when a shipment is created in the dashboard. Setting a new default
clears the old one, because only one is allowed. The default can be replaced
but never removed, so an account that has one always has one.
