# Rates

Ask the couriers what a consignment will cost you to ship. The markup on your
Bob Go plan is included; none of the checkout rules, rates-at-checkout markups
or exclusions you configured in Bob Go are applied. For buyer-facing prices use
[Rates at checkout](../5_Rates%20at%20checkout/rates_at_checkout.md); the
difference is explained in
[Important concepts](../4_Important%20concepts/README.md#rates-at-checkout-vs-rates).

Rating is the step before booking. A shipment on a service level the couriers
did not offer for that lane is still created, and then fails with
`submission_status: "no-rates"` once Bob Go rates it, so rate first even when
you already know which courier you want.
